Gematria is the practice of reading words as numbers — an ancient interpretive art that grew up in the alphabets where the letters were the numbers. This page introduces what it is and how it is used, points you to the gematria calculator, sets out our own materials, and then lays out the traditions and methods in full.
Gematria sits in the same family as the rest of our numerology work — numerology pointed at language rather than at a date. It is a deep and living tradition, and the aim here is to lay it out fairly: what it is, how it has been practiced for centuries, and a few things we find interesting, with a calculator you can use as you read.
The first part introduces gematria and the conventional way it is used, and links the calculator. A short middle section gives our own thoughts and materials. The rest is reference — the breakdowns for each tradition and method. This is an informative page, not a set of conclusions; gematria is an open thread for us, and we present it as one.
Where letters were numbers.
The reason gematria exists in some cultures and not others is simple and easy to miss. Hebrew, Greek, and Arabic had no separate set of numeral signs for much of their history — the letters themselves served as the numbers. Aleph was one, bet was two; alpha was one, beta was two. So every word a person wrote already carried a number, with no extra step: the sum of its letters. Gematria is the move from there — treating that built-in number as meaningful, so that two words which share a value can be read as quietly related.
From that single idea grew an art used across the ancient and medieval world: in Jewish scriptural interpretation and in the mystical tradition of Kabbalah, in Greek oracles and inscriptions, in magical texts, in the Arabic composing of dates, and in everyday wordplay. Wherever letters doubled as numerals, people read meaning in the totals. In English, where letters were never numerals, the same practice is carried out with a chosen scheme — an adaptation we come to below.
Sum, compare, read.
The conventional practice is straightforward. You choose a system of letter-values; you add up the letters of a word, a name, or a phrase to get its number; and, if you wish, you reduce that number to a single digit. Then comes the interpretive step that makes it gematria rather than arithmetic: you set the number beside other words of the same value, or beside numbers that already carry significance, and you read the equivalence as a connection — a hidden kinship the plain surface of the text does not show.
In the plainest English scheme the letters simply run in order — A = 1, B = 2, C = 3, on to Z = 26:
The other common scheme, the Pythagorean reduction, folds those down to a single digit — so the nine numbers repeat across the alphabet and every letter sits under one of them:

Around this core sit a few related techniques the tradition counts as kin. Notarikon reads a single word as the initials of a whole phrase, the way an acronym unpacks. Temurah substitutes letters by a fixed scheme — the best known is atbash, which swaps the first letter of the alphabet for the last, the second for the second-to-last, and so on. And in Hebrew and Arabic alike, writers have long composed chronograms: phrases whose letters, summed, spell out a date. In its classical home gematria is above all a way of reading — of hearing resonances between words — rather than a way of predicting.

The nine numbers, layer by layer.
Here the layers sit one under another, kept separate on purpose. For each number: the VecNine type, the meaning traditional numerology gives it, our own reading of how the two line up, and then the gematria — words whose letters reduce to that number. The gematria splits in two: words we’d expect from the theme (thought fit), and others the corpus turned up at the same number (new from corpus). The tradition at its deepest.
Gematria’s richest home is Hebrew. The twenty-two letters carry standard values in three steps — aleph through tet as one to nine, yod through tsadi as ten to ninety, qof through tav as one hundred to four hundred — and five letters take a second “final” form at the end of a word. From that base the tradition built a toolkit of methods, each a different way to count:
In the Jewish mystical tradition gematria is far more than wordplay. The foundational Sefer Yetzirah (“Book of Formation”) describes creation itself as carried out through the twenty-two letters and the ten sefirot — the letters as the building blocks of the world. Because the letters, and so their numbers, are held to be the very elements reality is made from, their sums are taken to reveal real connections rather than coincidences. The Zohar, the central work of Kabbalah, uses gematria throughout to bind verses together and draw out hidden meaning; the thirteenth-century mystic Abraham Abulafia built an entire contemplative discipline on permuting the letters of the divine names; and the ten sefirot of the Tree of Life, the map of divine emanation, are threaded with number at every step.

What the tradition does with the matches is the heart of it. In Kabbalah and the Talmud, words of equal value are taken to illuminate one another. Chai (חי, “life”) sums to eighteen, which is why gifts are so often given in multiples of eighteen. Ahavah (אהבה, “love”) and echad (אחד, “one”) each equal thirteen — and their sum, twenty-six, is the value of the four-letter name of God (יהוה); love and oneness, added, make the Name. The Talmud notes that yayin (“wine”) and sod (“secret”) both equal seventy — wine goes in, the secret comes out. Mashiach (משיח, “messiah”) and nachash (נחש, “serpent”) both come to three hundred fifty-eight; the six hundred thirteen commandments are remembered as TaRYaG, that number spelled in letters. These are the kinds of resonance the tradition prizes.
Isopsephy, Pythagoras, and an alphabet of three nines.
The Greeks ran the same idea under the name isopsephy — “equal in number,” from the psephoi, the counting-pebbles. The structure beneath the Greek system is worth dwelling on. The number-alphabet ran to twenty-seven symbols, falling into three clean ranks of nine: nine units (alpha through theta, one to nine), nine tens (iota through koppa, ten to ninety), and nine hundreds (rho through sampi, one hundred to nine hundred). To keep the ranks even, three archaic letters long gone from ordinary writing — digamma at six, koppa at ninety, sampi at nine hundred — were kept on for their numbers alone. The whole apparatus was built as nine, then nine, then nine: twenty-seven, three nested nines.
The Greco-Roman world used it in oracles, magical papyri, and graffiti, and tradition credited Pythagoras. Its famous turns are still familiar: the “number of the beast,” six hundred sixty-six, is an isopsephy riddle, and early Christians answered it by spelling Jesus (ΙΗΣΟΥΣ) to eight hundred eighty-eight. Kosmos, the ordered world, comes to six hundred; Amen to ninety-nine; the name Abraxas to three hundred sixty-five, the days of the year.
The Greeks credited Pythagoras himself (c. 570–495 BCE) with this number-art, and his school gave the West the conviction that underlies all of numerology: that number is the principle of reality — “all things are number.” The Pythagoreans gave the numbers character — the monad (one) as source and unity, the dyad (two) as division, the triad (three) as the first true harmony with its beginning, middle, and end, the tetrad (four) as justice and the order of the material world — and they revered the tetractys, the triangle of ten points (1 + 2 + 3 + 4 = 10) they held sacred and swore their oaths by. This is the same instinct as gematria, working on the numbers directly rather than through words, and the two have traveled together ever since. From this Pythagorean stream, carried forward through Neoplatonism, descends Western numerology itself — including the reduction scheme shown above, the cipher that still bears his name, folding the alphabet onto the nine digits.
The same idea, elsewhere.
The alphanumeric habit appears a third time in Arabic, whose letters carry numbers in the old abjad order — still used to compose date-bearing chronograms, where a chosen phrase encodes the year. It is the same instinct as the Hebrew and Greek: letters that are also numbers, read for meaning.
English is the modern adaptation, and works a little differently because Latin letters were never numerals — a value has to be assigned by a scheme. Two are common: the ordinal count (A as one through Z as twenty-six) and the Pythagorean reduction (A through I as one to nine, then repeating, so the alphabet cycles one to nine). Because the scheme is a choice, a single word can carry more than one number — home is twenty-three by reduction and forty-one by ordinal — which is simply part of working with a letter-numerology in a script whose letters were not numbers. Our own view, the same one noted on the calculator, is that these letter-numbers carry real but light weight — less than the numbers in a birthdate, nearer the weight of a month or a year.
A living tradition.
Gematria is a genuine and ancient art — native to the scripts where letters were numbers, formalized most deeply in the Hebrew tradition, mirrored in Greek isopsephy on an alphabet built three nines deep, echoed in Arabic, and carried into English by a chosen scheme. Read it as its practitioners do and it is a way of hearing the resonances beneath a text. The structure underneath it — the nine, again and again — is part of why it sits in this catalog at all.
