LANGUAGE METHOD

Treat the vocabulary as evidence, not as a cage

A personality system is partly a language system. Vecnine compares ordinary meaning, source language, inherited technical use, and the recurring pattern being described so that a translated label does not become the whole person.

ABSTRACT

The Enneagram is taught through inherited words whose modern English meanings are often narrower than the psychological structures teachers intend. Naranjo explicitly called for a return to the fuller meaning of the traditional terms and described character as an organized interaction of ruling passion and cognitive fixation. Vecnine extends that insight into a translation ecology: the language of the specific source text, the author’s broader language context, later translations, current lexical fields, historical semantics, actual etymology, documented transmission, comparative vocabularies, and a separately labeled causal synthesis. The aim is not to make etymology prove type. It is to stop imprecise words from hiding the thing being described.

Explore the language directly: Open the Word & Meaning Explorer to follow each passion from source term and historical range through modern compression and Vecnine reconstruction.

1. A personality taxonomy is partly a language system

A typology cannot be more precise than the distinctions its vocabulary preserves. Naranjo’s Spanish introduction to Carácter y Neurosis opens with Oliver P. John’s observation that a mature taxonomy gives a field an established vocabulary — a way out of scientific “Babel.” Naranjo then treats each character as more than a list of traits: visible behaviors can be read as expressions of something more fundamental, with a motivational pole (passion) interacting with a cognitive distortion (fixation).

That makes wording structural. If Pride is reduced to helping, Fear to visible fright, Avarice to money, Gluttony to food, Lust to sex, or Sloth to physical laziness, the reader is not simply receiving a shorter definition; the psychological object itself has been narrowed. The opposite error happens when a useful mechanism is discovered and the old word is explained away: “Avarice does not really mean greed; it means withholding energy.” That throws away information in the other direction.

Vecnine editorial rule: literal meaning remains inside the passion; the type-specific mechanism expands and organizes it. A mechanism is not allowed to replace the passion, and one literal behavior is not allowed to exhaust it.

2. “Source language” is not one thing

Naranjo was Chilean and worked extensively in Spanish, so Spanish is important. But “check the Spanish” is not a sufficient method. His official publication chronology lists the English Character and Neurosis before the Spanish Carácter y Neurosis. For a specific sentence, the first object of study is therefore the language of the edition actually being cited. Another language becomes comparison evidence, not an automatic override.

AUTHOR-LANGUAGE CONTEXT

The languages that shaped the author’s ordinary conceptual world. Relevant context, not a trump card.

SOURCE-TEXT LANGUAGE

The language of the exact edition/passage being cited. First priority for interpreting that sentence.

TRANSLATION EVIDENCE

How another edition renders the same concept; useful for seeing compression, expansion, or editorial choice.

WORD HISTORY

The actual etymology and semantic development of the term itself — which may or may not pass through the author’s native language.

This distinction matters especially for Eight. English lust is Germanic; Spanish lujuria belongs to the Latin luxuria line. The two can illuminate the same passion without one being the etymological ancestor of the other.

3. Naranjo’s own instruction: recover the traditional words

The language method is not being imposed on Naranjo from outside. In both the English and Spanish introductions, he explicitly says the traditional words need to be returned to a fuller meaning. He then broadens anger beyond explosive irritation, lust beyond sex, gluttony beyond food, and avarice beyond a single literal object. In the same discussion he pairs each passion with a corresponding fixation and later describes fixation as a cognitive rationalization that can sustain the passion.

The important inference is modest but powerful: a modern gloss can be too small for the concept. The correction is not to invent a secret definition. It is to recover the word’s range, identify Naranjo’s characterological use, and keep the cognitive/defensive mechanism in its own layer.

4. The evidence classes must stay separate

LINEAGE SOURCE

What Naranjo, Ichazo, or a historically connected source actually says.

LEXICAL EVIDENCE

What an authoritative dictionary says a word means in the language being studied.

HISTORICAL LEXICON

Earlier attested senses and semantic change.

TRANSMISSION HISTORY

Documented Greek/Latin/Christian or other concept transmission.

COMPARATIVE PARALLEL

An independent tradition that separates a psychologically useful neighboring concept.

VECNINE SYNTHESIS

The causal field, bridge, action-vector, sequence role, or speech hypothesis inferred by Vecnine.

A dictionary cannot prove personality. Etymology cannot establish a birthdate mechanism. A Buddhist or Chinese term cannot become hidden Enneagram lineage because it resembles a type. A translation cannot silently overwrite the text it translates. Negative findings count too: when gula really is food-specific, the honest result is “Naranjo generalized appetite psychologically,” not “the ancient word secretly meant novelty.”

5. Six: danger, fear, diffidentia, distrust, and confidence

Six is the clearest demonstration of why the layered method matters. Teaching Six as “fearful” encourages readers to look for visible fright. Naranjo’s own Type Six material is much broader: anxiety as a frozen alarm, fear of error and betrayal, doubt, double-checking, lack of confidence, hyper-vigilance for hidden meanings, authority ambivalence, and counterphobic aggression.

Spanish contributes a coherent neighborhood rather than a replacement definition. Miedo is fear tied to real or imagined risk/harm. Temor can be the passion that makes one avoid what is judged harmful, risky, or dangerous, but also suspicion of future harm. Desconfianza is lack of trust/confidence; its semantic neighbors include suspicion, apprehension, skepticism, fear, and difidencia. Difidencia, from Latin diffidentia, names distrust or lack of faith/confidence. Several of these lexical fields oppose themselves to confianza.

POSSIBLE DANGER / THREAT / UNRELIABILITY → FEAR → CONFIDENCE BECOMES PROVISIONAL → DIFFIDENTIA / DISTRUST / DOUBT → SCAN · QUESTION · TEST · VERIFY → SUFFICIENT TRUST/CONFIDENCE TO PROCEED (OR A DEFENSIVE RESPONSE WHEN IT CANNOT BE ESTABLISHED)

The arrows are Vecnine synthesis. The nodes are separately sourced. Danger does not replace Fear; diffidentia does not become an invented historical passion. The bridge explains why scanning, distrust, rules, authority, contingency planning, alliance-reading, reassurance, and counterphobia can all belong to the same architecture.

6. The other eight: what translation recovers

1 · ANGER / IRA

Spanish ira keeps literal anger and indignation intact. Naranjo’s controlled resentment and “opposition to reality” explain how anger can become correction and standards without ceasing to be anger. Vecnine places discrepancy/wrongness as a root field, explicitly as synthesis.

2 · PRIDE / ORGULLO / SOBERBIA

Orgullo includes excessive self-estimation and superiority. Neighboring soberbia adds a striking relational vector: an appetite to be preferred. This clarifies specialness and elevated relational value without redefining Pride as helping or need-denial.

3 · VANITY / DECEIT · VANIDAD / ENGAÑO

Naranjo separates image-value from the cognitive falsity that lets image become self. Spanish engaño can include untruth in belief and reasoning, not only conscious interpersonal lying. Achievement is one possible proof-display for the image, not the passion itself.

4 · ENVY / ENVIDIA

Spanish envidia preserves both pain at another’s good and desire/emulation for what one lacks. Literal envy and “goodness elsewhere” therefore belong to one larger field rather than competing definitions.

5 · AVARICE / AVARICIA · AVIDEZ · CODICIA

Current Spanish avaricia remains materially strong; that negative finding prevents a fake etymology. Neighboring craving words and historical English widen the desire-field. Naranjo supplies the Five-specific movement: holding on, holding in, conserving, and withdrawal against depletion.

7 · GLUTTONY / GULA · APETITO

Gula is still food/drink excess. The broader bridge is appetite. Naranjo generalizes the object of appetite toward pleasure, stimulation, possibility, and future nourishment. That is a psychological extension, not a hidden dictionary definition.

8 · LUST / LUJURIA

English lust is Germanic and historically ranged over desire, appetite, inclination, and pleasure. Spanish lujuria is strongly sexual but also preserves a broader excess/immoderation sense. Naranjo’s excess/intensity reading can therefore be linguistically supported without denying sexual lust or inventing a Latin origin for the English word.

9 · SLOTH / PEREZA · DESIDIA · ACEDIA

English “sloth” foregrounds laziness. Spanish pereza includes negligence/carelessness/delay; desidia sharpens lack of care; the acedia tradition adds a historically connected care/concern field. Naranjo’s psychospiritual inertia explains why busyness can coexist with failure to mobilize toward one’s own interior priorities.

7. Speech is a second language layer: what the lens makes a person keep talking about

There is a second question beyond the history of the definition: if an archetype repeatedly makes a class of conditions salient, should that salience leave a trace in spontaneous speech? Vecnine treats this as a research hypothesis, not a type rule.

The useful signal is not whether somebody can repeat Enneagram jargon. It is whether certain semantic fields arise without being prompted, across many topics and over time. A threat-oriented architecture may repeatedly produce language about reliability, authority, trust, motives, expectations, rules, risk, contingency, verification, and what could go wrong. A depletion-oriented architecture may recurrently talk about time, energy, privacy, access, preparedness, information, boundaries, sufficiency, and the cost of participation. A discrepancy-oriented architecture may recurrently generate should/ought/correct/improper/better/standard language.

Speech is noisy evidence. Profession, culture, ideology, current stress, interviewer prompts, learned Enneagram vocabulary, neurodivergence, regional dialect, and self-presentation can all produce false positives. That is why one phrase or one video is not enough. The stronger research design is longitudinal and blind: collect many transcripts, hide the person’s self-type and calculated sequence from the scorer, pre-register semantic domains, and test whether recurrent appraisal/attention clusters predict sequence positions better than baseline.

A proposed speech-corpus protocol

The hypothesis is not “Sixes say trust.” It is that a stable attention system may generate a statistically detectable semantic ecology — reliability, danger appraisal, uncertainty management, verification, authority, confidence thresholds — more often than comparison groups.

8. Comparative languages: harvest distinctions, not authority

Greek, Latin, Germanic, Hebrew, Sanskrit/Pali, Chinese and Buddhist Chinese can be useful when they distinguish psychological neighbors modern English collapses. But Vecnine must ask a historical question before a symbolic one: is there documented transmission? If not, the term is a comparative parallel only.

The best harvest is often a distinction: craving versus grasping; envy versus stinginess; laziness versus heedlessness versus lack of care; fear versus doubt; pride versus haughtiness. Another tradition can show that human observers found two phenomena worth naming separately. It cannot certify that Vecnine’s mapping is true.

9. What this changes in the method

The language layer now sits inside the causal architecture rather than beside it: capacity → root field → attention magnets → appraisal → traditional passion → semantic bridge → fixation → defense → self-image → action vector → regulatory goal → completion condition → relational pattern → visible expression → reinforcement loop → mature expression. The inherited passion remains visible. Translation and word history clarify it. Semantic neighbors explain intermediate moves. Vecnine labels the causal arrows as synthesis.

Sequence position is not treated as a percentage of passion. Position describes role in an interacting architecture, while manifestation varies separately by centrality, breadth, automaticity, frequency, intensity, persistence, visibility, and consciousness. This is why a later-position type can be vivid in one domain and why a high-position type can be quiet or compensated.

10. Limits and falsifiability

  1. Dictionaries describe language, not personality mechanisms.
  2. Etymology is history, not destiny.
  3. Naranjo’s characterology is a theory and includes historically situated clinical vocabulary.
  4. Translation can reveal ambiguity and also introduce it.
  5. Comparative vocabularies can converge without historical relation.
  6. Speech claims require blinded longitudinal testing.
  7. Vecnine’s causal chain is a synthesis and should change when observation contradicts it.

These are not disclaimers bolted onto the paper. They are the method that keeps a useful linguistic insight from turning into unfalsifiable proof.

Conclusion

The nine passion words are not arbitrary code names, but a dictionary entry is not a full personality theory. The word names a human phenomenon. Its history can recover meanings that modern usage has narrowed. Naranjo shows how the phenomenon can be organized into character. Translation can reveal distinctions and create false ones. Semantic neighbors can show intermediate psychological steps. Speech may reveal what the mind repeatedly makes salient. Vecnine then proposes how those layers connect — and labels the proposal as synthesis rather than inherited fact.

The aim is not to make the traditional words harsher or softer. The aim is to get the language close enough to the phenomenon that the phenomenon can be seen.
