A self-report instrument, built by a mother and daughter in the 1940s, that operationalized Jung’s psychological types and added a fourth axis to reach sixteen. The questionnaire everyone has met
Of all the typologies in this catalog, the Myers–Briggs Type Indicator is the one many readers will already have taken, in a college class, for a job, or at a corporate offsite. It belongs here as a familiar comparison point. It is not birthdate-derived, and a four-letter questionnaire result cannot be converted into a Vecnine position.
The documented line runs from Carl Jung's Psychological Types, published in 1921 and translated into English in 1923, to the instrument Katharine Cook Briggs and Isabel Briggs Myers developed. Claudio Naranjo also engaged Jungian and other psychological vocabularies while developing his account of Enneagram character. That is a historical contact point, not a single family tree: the modern Enneagram did not descend from MBTI, and MBTI did not descend from the Enneagram.
This page therefore compares descriptions, outputs, and failure modes. A shared adjective is a prompt to look closer, not corroboration. A disagreement may reveal a difference in questions, inputs, or categories; it does not by itself decide which instrument has found the truer person.
MBTI sorts a set of self-reported preferences into one of sixteen cells. Four binary axes, Introversion/Extraversion, Sensing/Intuition, Thinking/Feeling, Judging/Perceiving, produce a code such as ESTJ or INFP. The instrument is widely used and psychometrically contested. This paper tests three especially legible descriptive correspondences and several looser ones; none is a conversion rule.
A direct line, and a later conversation
Jung is a direct source for Briggs and Myers. His place in modern Enneagram writing is different and later:
The Briggs–Myers line runs from Katharine Cook Briggs, who began studying personality differences around 1917, through her daughter Isabel's reading of Jung in the 1920s, through the prototype questionnaire of 1942, through the copyrighted Briggs–Myers Type Indicator of 1943, through commercial publication in 1975 and the global spread that followed. It builds a measurement instrument from four dichotomies (in plain words: four separate two-way choices), translating a qualitative typology into countable answers.
The Ichazo–Naranjo line runs from Oscar Ichazo's synthesis at Arica in Chile in the late 1960s, through Claudio Naranjo's adoption and elaboration at Esalen in the 1970s, into the modern Enneagram of personality. Naranjo compared the types with contemporary psychological vocabularies, Jungian language among them. That comparison does not make Jung the common ancestor of both systems.
Vecnine builds from the Enneagram line and a separate birthdate calculation. MBTI enters this catalog as an adjacent instrument whose categories can be compared, questioned, and kept distinct.
Jungian function-stack writing uses a native hierarchy: dominant, auxiliary, tertiary, inferior. Vecnine does not import that hierarchy. Its positions record calculation order and operate together; they are not four rungs of psychological prominence. Keeping the vocabularies separate prevents a familiar MBTI stack from being projected onto a Vecnine sequence.
Where descriptions overlap
Three pairings are especially easy to compare at the level of outward description. They remain proposals: similar language does not establish identical people, causes, or measurements.
Type 1 ↔ ESTJ
Jung's extraverted thinking type orients to external order and measurable correctness. Type 1 descriptions also foreground standards and correction. The overlap is legible; motive, input, and category remain different.
Type 2 ↔ ESFJ
Jung's extraverted feeling type orients to relational values and social attunement. Type 2 descriptions can share the room-reading, other-directed surface. The proposed correspondence does not make every ESFJ a Two.
Type 8 ↔ ESTP
Jung's extraverted sensation type orients to the immediate and physical. Type 8 descriptions can share that present-tense force. The comparison still leaves motive and the rest of the calculated sequence unresolved.
Each proposal emphasizes outward engagement in the descriptions being compared. That shared surface is a reason to observe the pairings, not evidence that the Enneagram and MBTI measure one underlying object or share an ancestry.
The four-letter shorthand
MBTI catches things Vecnine doesn't directly read. Three of them are worth naming:
A vocabulary for reported preferences. The S/N axis (Sensing vs. Intuition) asks whether a respondent favors concrete particulars or pattern and possibility. The T/F axis (Thinking vs. Feeling) asks how they say they weigh decisions. Those answers can supply useful comparison questions alongside a Vecnine sequence; they do not become extra positions in it.
Communication prompts. The J/P axis (Judging vs. Perceiving) asks about closure and open-endedness, plans settled or kept fluid. Treat the result as a prompt about work and communication habits, not a compatibility verdict.
Common-language accessibility. Far more readers know they are an INFP than know they are a 9-5-4. The MBTI vocabulary is the most widely-shared typology vocabulary in the English-speaking world. A person who knows their MBTI type has done some of the self-reflection that makes Vecnine reading easier.
What cannot be carried across
The clearest comparison begins with what the instruments do differently.
The input. MBTI is a self-report instrument: the respondent’s answers determine the code. Vecnine calculates from a recorded date. One can shift with response, interpretation, or an axis midpoint; the other is stable once the date is fixed. Stability of input does not by itself validate the resulting personality claim, so neither instrument gets automatic priority.
The returned object. MBTI returns four preference letters and, in function-stack interpretations, a native hierarchy of functions. Vecnine returns an ordered set of active positions plus an absent field. The active positions interact; none is a single base type with the rest serving as modifiers, and calculation order is not a general measure of lived prominence.
The received movement language. Enneagram teaching includes directional claims traditionally described as integration and disintegration. MBTI has no equivalent arrow map. This site can compare those vocabularies without treating a directional teaching as an experimentally established trajectory.
The instinct layer. Self-preservation, one-to-one, and social attention are separate from the MBTI I/E preference. A social-first person need not receive an E, and a self-preservation-first person need not receive an I.
The interaction question. A four-letter code can be read as four preferences or through its function-stack theory. A Vecnine result asks how positions filter and reinforce one another. That is a difference in model structure, not proof that one is deeper.
What the population numbers tell us
If sixteen types were evenly distributed, each would account for about 6.25% of the population. The actual MBTI distribution is nothing like this. The most common type, ISFJ, sits near 13.8% of the U.S. population; the rarest, INFJ, sits near 1.5%. Within the rare end, INTJ at roughly 2.1%, ENTJ at 1.8%, and ENTP at 3.2% join INFJ. Within the common end, ESFJ at 12.0% and ISTJ at 11.6% join ISFJ. The spread is roughly nine-to-one between the most and least common.
Two things follow from this. First, the four binary axes are not actually 50/50: 73% of the population sits on the Sensing side rather than Intuition, and 60% sits on the Feeling side rather than Thinking. The dichotomies are sold as balanced but the underlying base rates aren't. Second, and more importantly; there is no a priori prediction in MBTI of what the distribution should be. The instrument was built first and the distribution observed afterward. There was nothing to fail.
Vecnine's distributions are different in kind. Because the system reads off the calendar, expected frequencies for first, second, and later calculated positions can be computed before any sample is collected. Cohort research can then compare the observed record with that mechanical expectation.
This is not a defect in MBTI. The instrument is doing a different kind of work. But it is a structural reason why the two systems' claims about populations can't be compared apples-to-apples. The Briggs–Myers line measures a self-report distribution; the Vecnine line predicts a calendar-derived one and tests against it.
What to do with both readings
If you know your MBTI type, use it as a comparison point, not a substitute calculation. ESTJ→Type 1, ESFJ→Type 2, and ESTP→Type 8 are three especially legible proposed correspondences. A stable MBTI result still cannot determine a Vecnine position.
For the other thirteen MBTI cells, compare the language without assigning a Vecnine type from the letters. Run the birthdate through the Vecnine calculator, then ask where the two descriptions overlap, where they diverge, and what observation could distinguish the explanations.
If your MBTI code shifts on repeat testing, one possibility is proximity to an axis midpoint; response context and item interpretation can also matter. Record the change rather than turning it into a story about a hidden identity. A Vecnine result will not show questionnaire drift because it uses a fixed date, but that mechanical stability answers a different question.
Use the comparison to generate better observations, not a crosswalk verdict. Neither four letters nor nine calculated positions should end the inquiry.
An instrument, not a theory
The Myers–Briggs Type Indicator is, strictly speaking, a self-report questionnaire. It is not Jung's typology. It is one operationalization of Jung's typology, an attempt to make the qualitative categories Jung described into something countable.
The instrument presents a series of forced-choice items (the current Form M has 93 items; earlier forms had as many as 166) and from the answers sorts the respondent into one of sixteen cells, expressed as a four-letter code: ISTJ, ENFP, ESTJ, INFP, and so on. Each letter names one pole of a binary dichotomy:
E vs. I: Extraversion vs. Introversion, where the person's psychological energy is primarily directed (outward to the world, or inward to interior life).
S vs. N: Sensing vs. Intuition, how the person prefers to take in information (through concrete particulars, or through pattern and abstract possibility).
T vs. F: Thinking vs. Feeling, how the person prefers to make decisions (through logical analysis, or through values and impact-on-people).
J vs. P: Judging vs. Perceiving, how the person prefers to engage the outer world (with closure and structure, or with openness and adaptability).
Four binary choices, multiplied: 2×2×2×2 = 16. That is the structure.
Katharine Cook Briggs & Isabel Briggs Myers
Katharine Cook Briggs (1875–1968) began studying personality differences around 1915–1917, when her daughter Isabel brought home the man she would marry, Clarence "Chief" Myers. Katharine observed that Chief's personality was unlike anyone in her own family, outwardly focused and decisive where her family was reflective and values-driven, and the question of why sent her into the literature. Her early work, before she encountered Jung, identified four personality types of her own: meditative, spontaneous, executive, and sociable.
In 1923, Jung's Psychological Types was published in English. Briggs read it and recognized in it a more complete articulation of what she had been working toward. She adopted Jung's framework and began applying it. Her daughter Isabel followed.
Isabel Briggs Myers (1897–1980) graduated top of her class in political science from Swarthmore College and worked as a mystery novelist before turning to typology in earnest in the early 1940s. With her mother's research as foundation, she began designing a questionnaire that would identify Jung's types from a person's own answers.
The instrument took form during World War II, when women were entering the U.S. workforce in large numbers and there was an applied question to answer: what kind of work fits what kind of person? Isabel commenced the design in July 1942. The Briggs–Myers Type Indicator was copyrighted in 1943. In 1945 the dean of the George Washington School of Medicine allowed the prototype to be applied to first-year students. Form C, the standard form of the early decades, dates from this period.
Isabel added the fourth axis: Judging vs. Perceiving, that Jung had not made fully explicit but which Briggs and Myers thought necessary to fully describe the function-stack architecture. With that addition, the eight Jungian types became sixteen.
The instrument was published commercially in 1975 by Consulting Psychologists Press. Isabel typed herself as an INFP and spent the last decade of her life refining the instrument and its scoring. Both women had no formal training in psychology, statistics, or psychometrics, a fact that has been used both to dismiss their work and to highlight what determined non-academic researchers can accomplish when they take a question seriously over decades.
What the structure inherits
Jung's Psychological Types (1921; English 1923) describes four psychological functions, thinking, feeling, sensation, intuition, each of which can be oriented either extraverted (toward the outer world) or introverted (toward the inner world). Four functions times two orientations equals eight psychological types. This is the structure Briggs and Myers inherited.
Jung's claim was that one function is dominant in each person, their primary mode of engaging the world, and that the dominant function rides over an inferior opposite that is buried and underused. Between them sit auxiliary and tertiary functions of intermediate prominence. The four-function stack, layered, is what Jung was actually after, not a flat label but a dynamic architecture.
The MBTI four-letter code encodes this stack, though the encoding is not obvious. For a given four-letter type, the dominant function, auxiliary, tertiary, and inferior can all be derived from the letters by a set of rules. An INFP, for example, has introverted feeling as dominant, extraverted intuition as auxiliary, introverted sensing as tertiary, and extraverted thinking as inferior. The structure is in there.
In practice, most users read the four letters as four independent labels and never derive the function stack. This is a known critique of MBTI in popular use: the depth Jung was reaching for gets flattened into a static type code. Within the formal MBTI literature, the function-stack interpretation is preserved and taught.
What each axis is meant to measure
Extraversion (E) vs. Introversion (I)
The direction of psychological energy. Extraverts are oriented to and energized by the outer world, activity, people, external stimulation. Introverts are oriented to and energized by the inner world, reflection, depth, interior life. The MBTI distinction is not the popular shy-vs-outgoing reading; it is closer to where the person recharges. A reserved extravert and a sociable introvert are common patterns. Population is roughly 51% I to 49% E in U.S. samples, the closest split among the four axes.
Sensing (S) vs. Intuition (N)
How the person takes in information. Sensors orient to the concrete: what is here, what can be measured, what the senses report, what tradition and experience have established. Intuitives orient to the abstract: pattern, possibility, what could be, what something means. The split in U.S. samples is roughly 73% S to 27% N, the largest asymmetry of the four axes, and the source of much of the rarity at the high-N end of the MBTI distribution.
Thinking (T) vs. Feeling (F)
How the person makes decisions. Thinkers prefer impersonal logical analysis, what is true, what follows from what. Feelers prefer values-based weighing, what matters, what serves people, what aligns with what is held dear. The split is roughly 60% F to 40% T overall, with a sharp gender skew (more men type as T, more women as F). Like the other axes, T and F are preferences, not capacities, a feeler can think rigorously, and a thinker can value deeply.
Judging (J) vs. Perceiving (P)
How the person engages the outer world. Judgers prefer closure: settled plans, clear schedules, decisions made and acted on. Perceivers prefer open-endedness: kept options, fluid plans, decisions deferred until necessary. This is the axis Isabel Briggs Myers added to Jung's original eight, and it picks up something Jung had not fully articulated, the difference between an outwardly-organized life and an outwardly-improvisational one.
Inside the four-letter code
The function stack is the dynamic layer beneath the static MBTI label. For each of the sixteen cells, a specific ordering of the eight Jungian functions is implied. The rules:
The dominant function is one of the two middle letters (S, N, T, or F), oriented in the direction of the first letter (E or I) for J types and the opposite for P types. The auxiliary function is the other middle letter, oriented opposite to the dominant. The tertiary function is the auxiliary's opposite. The inferior function is the dominant's opposite.
Concrete example. An INFJ: introverted intuition dominant (Ni), extraverted feeling auxiliary (Fe), introverted thinking tertiary (Ti), extraverted sensing inferior (Se). The four functions form a layered architecture: Ni does most of the work, Fe handles the social interface, Ti is available but secondary, Se is the buried opposite that comes out under stress.
Most casual users of MBTI never engage with the function stack. The formal literature treats it as central, and it is the layer at which MBTI most closely tracks Jung's original architecture. It is also the layer most useful for comparison with the Enneagram lineage, where fixation and integration directions describe a similar layered dynamic structure.
From wartime workforce to corporate offsite
The instrument's first application was vocational. Briggs and Myers built it to answer a wartime question: with women entering the U.S. workforce in unprecedented numbers, which kinds of work fit which kinds of people? The 1945 medical-student application at George Washington was an early validation effort.
Through the 1950s and 60s, Myers continued to refine the instrument and publish on it. In 1962 the Educational Testing Service published the manual; Isabel typed herself as INFP and was deeply involved in the work throughout. The 1975 commercial publication by Consulting Psychologists Press opened the door to widespread use in human resources, executive coaching, marriage counseling, and educational guidance.
By the 1980s, MBTI had become the most widely-used personality assessment in corporate America. Estimates of total administrations now run into the tens of millions. The instrument is licensed by the Myers & Briggs Foundation and the Center for Applications of Psychological Type (CAPT), with formal certification programs for practitioners. Many readers will have taken it at least once, either as a professional development exercise or out of curiosity from a free online clone.
What the academy says
Academic psychology has been mixed-to-critical on MBTI for decades. The standard criticisms:
Forced binary categories sit on continuous traits. The underlying dimensions (extraversion, etc.) are bell-curve distributed, but MBTI forces a binary cut. People sitting near the midline get assigned to one side or the other based on small differences and can switch with re-test. Around half of test-takers get at least one letter different on re-test after a few weeks.
The function-stack theory is contested. The structure by which MBTI derives the eight-function ordering from the four-letter code (dominant–auxiliary–tertiary–inferior) is not unambiguously supported by the empirical data on within-person function patterning.
Predictive validity for the original use case is weak. The instrument was built to match people to jobs. The empirical evidence that knowing a person's MBTI type predicts job success or job satisfaction better than chance is thin.
The instrument is commercial. The Myers & Briggs Foundation and licensees control the instrument and the certification, which limits independent research access. The Big Five / Five-Factor Model is the academic-psychology preferred trait model, with broader research access and stronger psychometric support.
The defense of MBTI tends to come from two directions. The first is practical: it is a useful vocabulary for self-reflection and team dynamics whether or not it predicts job performance. The second is that the critique of forced binary categories applies to any categorical typology, including the Enneagram, the zodiac, and Vecnine itself. The right response is not to abandon categories but to use them with awareness of what they catch and miss.
Our reading: MBTI is a real but imperfect operationalization of a real underlying typology. Where it agrees with other lineages reaching the same territory by independent means, the agreement is informative. Where it disagrees, the disagreement is informative in a different way. Either reading is more useful than dismissing the instrument outright.
A photograph without a clock
Set beside the older systems on this shelf, MBTI’s shape is worth stating plainly: it is typology only. It carries no temporal branch, no personal years, periods, or transits; no electional branch, no doctrine of favorable timing; no locational branch; and no remedial branch beyond the ordinary self-development literature any psychology attracts. It answers who and stops. The absence is itself data about the field: the traditions that answer the other questions, with whom, when, where, what to do, grew those branches over centuries of practice, for better and for worse. MBTI, young, psychometric, and plain about its scope, never grew them and has never claimed to. When this project maps a tradition’s branches, MBTI is the control case: the one instrument on the shelf that was never asked to tell time.
Where MBTI & Vecnine meet
The useful way to hold the relationship is modest: MBTI and Vecnine organize personality material differently. Some descriptions overlap; other comparisons remain speculative. Neither overlap nor shared vocabulary proves that the instruments measure the same thing.
MBTI's cutting angles are cognitive preference (S/N, T/F) and outward orientation (E/I, J/P). Four binary axes give it sixteen cells, and those cells describe how a person processes information and engages the world. The cells are static labels, once you know your code, you know your code.
Vecnine returns an ordered sequence of nine type lenses from a birthdate and keeps absent results in a separate field. Position records the calculation’s order, not a universal ruler of lived strength: reinforcement, context, and experience can make a later lens equally or more prominent. Instinct work is an additional descriptive layer rather than a substitute for that sequence.
The descriptions can overlap without requiring a shared measurement object.
Where comparison is easiest
Three proposed correspondences are especially legible at the level of surface description. They are working cross-references assembled from Jungian language, Enneagram teaching, and practitioner observation; they are not conversion rules and have not been established as one-to-one measurements.

All three proposed matches emphasize outward engagement in the descriptions being compared. That makes them useful examples for further observation; it does not remove the remainder, establish ancestry, or allow an MBTI result to determine a Vecnine position.
Where several cells share language
For five more Vecnine types, writers have proposed several MBTI neighbors rather than one cell. The table records those proposals as reading prompts, not as claims that a type spans or converts into the listed codes.

These looser correspondences are prompts for comparison, not identification shortcuts. An INFP result can coexist with many Vecnine sequences because a questionnaire code and a calculated sequence are different objects. Read the descriptions side by side; do not use one to manufacture the other.
Where the crosswalk refuses a shortcut
Type 9 has no agreed one-cell counterpart in this comparison. Naranjo's phrase "extraverted resignation" names a character dynamic that does not line up neatly with one MBTI code. People with Type 9 in a Vecnine sequence may report different MBTI preferences; that spread needs observation rather than a claim that MBTI cannot see the type at all.
One possible reason is a difference in subject: Jung emphasizes conscious orientation and functions, while Type 9 descriptions emphasize relation to desire, presence, and assertion. That is an interpretive distinction, not a demonstrated blind spot in the instrument.
The restrained implication is that a person with Type 9 in the first calculated position could receive many different MBTI codes. That spread may reflect differences in what the instruments ask and return. It should not automatically be explained as a false surface concealing a truer identity.
Where the two axes brush past each other
The MBTI I/E axis and instinct language can produce superficially similar descriptions, but they are not the same axis. MBTI records a questionnaire preference between extraversion and introversion. Instinct work distinguishes attention to self-preservation (sp), one-to-one intensity (sx), and the social field (so).
Any correlation between an instinct result and the I/E axis remains an empirical question. Social-first attention is not the same thing as questionnaire extraversion; self-preservation-first attention is not the same thing as introversion; one-to-one intensity can appear with either letter. The labels direct attention toward different objects.
A useful comparison therefore asks two separate questions: where does attention habitually go, and how does the person report restoring and directing energy? Conflating the answers erases the distinction the instruments are supposed to examine.
Using two instruments without letting one overrule the other
An MBTI result can supply comparison questions for a practitioner, but it cannot identify a Vecnine sequence. Even ESTJ, ESFJ, and ESTP should be treated as proposed descriptive correspondences rather than diagnostic conversions.
When the two readings sound similar, name the specific overlap. When they diverge, preserve the disagreement. A questionnaire result may shift near an axis midpoint; a calculated result may still fail to match a person’s self-report. Neither fact authorizes a story about a false surface, hidden truth, or deficient self-knowledge without independent evidence.
The useful work is observational: ask which descriptions recur, which depend on context, and which prediction would distinguish competing explanations. The two instruments can remain side by side without either one automatically overruling the other.
The instrument, briefly
A respondent answers a series of forced-choice items, "When you go somewhere for the day, would you rather (a) plan what you will do and when, or (b) just go?", and the answers tally into preference scores on each of the four dichotomies.
For each axis (E/I, S/N, T/F, J/P), the side with the higher score determines the letter that goes into the four-letter code. The strength of preference (often reported as a number 1–30 or a percentage) is also produced but rarely used by casual readers.
The current commercial version, MBTI Form M, has 93 items and is administered by certified practitioners. Form Q, an expanded version, has 144 items and produces 20 facet scores beneath the four main dichotomies. Free online "MBTI-style" tests (16Personalities being the most popular) use different item sets that are not licensed by the Myers & Briggs Foundation and produce broadly similar but not identical results.
What each dichotomy returns
The output is a four-letter code, one letter per axis. Sixteen combinations are possible.

Read by Briggs & Myers on their own terms
The official MBTI manual is careful about several things modern critics regularly overlook:
Preferences are not abilities. A person who prefers thinking is not necessarily a better thinker than someone who prefers feeling; the preference is about which mode the person turns to first, not about how skilled they are in either. Both modes are available to all people.
The four-letter code is a starting point, not a verdict. Within each cell; there is significant individual variation. Two ENFPs can differ enormously in their actual presentation.
Type is best confirmed by the respondent. The instrument is supposed to be a starting point for self-reflection; the respondent's own recognition of the description is the final test of whether the type is right. This is closer to Naranjo's clinical-confirmation method than the popular reading of MBTI as a diagnostic test.
No type is better than another. Every cell has strengths and characteristic difficulties. This is the principle Saris emphasizes in his cruise-ship lectures, and it is correctly in the manual: the instrument is descriptive, not prescriptive, and not graded.
What happens when you take it again
Test-retest reliability of MBTI is moderate. Across multiple studies, around 50% of respondents get at least one letter different when retested after a five-week interval. The most stable letters tend to be E/I; the least stable tend to be T/F and J/P.
The dominant explanation is the forced-binary structure on top of continuous traits. A person whose underlying preference is near the 50/50 midline on a given axis will tip one way on one test and the other way on the next based on small differences in mood, item interpretation, or current situation. Two competing readings:
The forgiving reading. The retest drift is a feature, not a bug. Real personality is continuous; the binary letters are useful labels but should be held loosely. A person who alternates between INFP and INFJ is sitting at the J/P midline, and the appropriate response is to read both type profiles and integrate the parts that resonate.
The critical reading. Test-retest drift of this magnitude undercuts the categorical claim. If a meaningful proportion of respondents can be re-categorized into a different cell on a different day, the cell membership isn't measuring something stable. The Big Five trait-dimensional approach handles this more plainly by reporting continuous scores rather than categorical assignments.
Our reading: both critiques are correct, and the forgiving reading is the more useful one in practice. The categorical structure of MBTI is its most useful feature for self-reflection, people work better with sixteen vivid cells than with five continuous scores, and the midline drift is real but contained. The deeper problem is that the underlying typology Jung was working toward had a layered architecture (the function stack) that MBTI's four-letter code only partially encodes. The layered architecture is what we read Vecnine as also working with, by different means.
What the test cannot help being
MBTI is a self-report instrument. Like every self-report instrument, it is vulnerable to two distinct failure modes: impression management (the respondent answers as they want to be perceived rather than as they are) and self-misperception (the respondent answers truthfully as they perceive themselves, but their perception of themselves is not accurate).
Impression management is the smaller problem. The MBTI item set is designed with this in mind, items repeat preferences in different forms to catch inconsistency, and respondents who try to "answer politically correctly" tend to be caught by the repetition pattern. A widely-told anecdotal point: at least one respondent has reported deliberately answering opposite to her usual preferences on every item and still receiving her usual type code, because the underlying signal survives the distortion. The instrument is moderately robust to motivated misreporting.
Self-misperception is the bigger problem. A person who has built an identity around being something they are not, an introvert who has trained themselves to "fake" extraversion, an intuitive who has been raised to value concrete details, will report the trained surface, and the test will return it. This is the failure mode Vecnine's birthdate-derived foundation is built to bypass. The calendar does not know what you think about yourself.
For practitioners working with both instruments, a conflict is data rather than a diagnosis. Check the test conditions, the language of the items, context, and the concrete behaviors each interpretation predicts. Do not presume that disagreement proves a client’s self-perception has drifted.
The 4×4 grid
Sixteen cells, each named by its four-letter code, with the population frequency in U.S. samples and a brief surface description. The crosswalk note records working associations drawn from existing teaching and practitioner observation. It is neither a conversion table nor a claim that an MBTI code determines any Vecnine position.

The Keirsey grouping
David Keirsey's Please Understand Me (1978) grouped the sixteen MBTI types into four "temperaments" based on the middle two letters. The temperament grouping is useful as a higher-level summary and is the most widely-used clustering of MBTI cells.

The temperament grouping reaches a four-cell taxonomy reminiscent of the ancient four-humors model (sanguine, choleric, melancholic, phlegmatic) and the modern DiSC (Dominance, Influence, Steadiness, Conscientiousness) four-cell. Naranjo's resolution of the Type-5 typing question relied in part on the Keirsey-Bates MBTI material to articulate the NT-Rational territory that the Jungian function-typology alone underdescribes.
Use resemblance to generate observations
Do not infer a Vecnine sequence from an MBTI result. Instead, use the proposed overlaps to form questions that could turn out to be wrong:
For outward, structured codes such as ESTJ or ESFJ: is the person’s behavior organized around correctness, relationship, achievement, security, or some combination the four-letter code does not separate?
For inward, intuitive codes such as INFP or INFJ: does the reported inner-life emphasis remain stable across context, and which calculated lenses offer genuinely distinct explanations?
For thinking codes such as INTP or ENTP: does analysis serve conservation, possibility, certainty, performance, or another motive? The same cognitive description can be recruited by different type lenses.
For any stable code: what evidence would disconfirm the proposed crosswalk? A comparison becomes useful when it risks being wrong.
The MBTI cell can organize a conversation. It cannot complete or override a Vecnine calculation.

The tagged history is multi-witnessed: Katharine Cook Briggs and Isabel Briggs Myers developed the Indicator in the 1940s on the frame of Jung’s Psychological Types (1921), the instrument’s own documented publication trail and every standard account agree on the mother–daughter authorship and the dates.
Jung’s typology itself is the published 1921 text; the Indicator’s adaptation of it is the part the paper describes, and that adaptation history is not in dispute anywhere in the record.
