Why this matters before anything else
Most personality tests ask you to describe yourself, then sort you. Quizzes do this. Self-typing through book descriptions does this. Even a careful interview-based session does this. The output reflects how you talked about yourself on a particular day, with a particular framing in mind, in front of a particular interviewer.
VecNine doesn't ask you anything. It takes one piece of information — the date you were born — and computes a sequence of nine numbers ranking how each personality archetype shows up in you. The math is the same for everyone, the result is the same every time, and the system can't be gamed.
This course teaches the calculation in plain language. By the end you'll be able to do it yourself with a pencil and an index card, you'll know which two numbers represent your dominant types, and you'll understand why this system rejects two ideas (wings and tritype) that the conventional Enneagram treats as core.
The calculation: linear, left to right
Conventional birthday numerology adds dates by category. It treats the month as one chunk, the day as another, the year as a third, then sums those chunks. VecNine doesn't do this.
VecNine adds the digits of your birthdate one at a time, left to right. Whichever digit appears first in the date gets added first. The order in which you'd write the date out loud is the order in which the digits enter the sum.
Take a birthday of July 9, 1987. Written out, that's 7 / 9 / 1987. We add each digit:
That final single-digit number — five, in this example — is called the digital root. It's the first of your two dominant numbers. We'll get to the second one next chapter.
Adding by category (month + day + year as separate chunks) loses information about the chronological structure of how the date was written. Adding linearly preserves it. Each digit contributes equally regardless of which slot it occupies. This is one of the small choices that makes VecNine different from older birthdate-based systems.
The two dominant numbers
Your sequence has nine positions, but two of them carry most of the signal. These are your two dominant types. They come from two different reductions of your birthdate.
Dominant one: the digital root. This is what we just calculated — the linear sum of all digits, reduced to a single number. For July 9, 1987, that's 5.
Dominant two: the day, reduced. Take just the day of the month. If it's already a single digit (1 through 9), that's it. If it's two digits (10 through 31), reduce it the same way: add the digits, then reduce again if needed. For July 9, the day is 9 — already single-digit, so it stays 9.
In this case the person's two main types are 5 (the Observer) and 9 (the Peacemaker). Those two archetypes form the dominant combination — the operating system this person runs on.
The full sequence has all nine types ranked, but if you only ever know two of them, these are the two to know. They explain most of the surface behavior, the recurring conflicts, the pattern of how the person handles stress and growth.

Edge cases & the order question
For most birthdates, the two dominants are simply the digital root and the reduced day. There are a few situations worth flagging.
When the day reduces past 9. A day like 18 becomes 1 + 8 = 9. A day like 29 becomes 2 + 9 = 11, then 1 + 1 = 2. Keep reducing until you have a single digit between 1 and 9. (Zero never occurs as a dominant because no birthdate produces zero as either reduction.)
When both dominants are the same number. If your digital root and your reduced day come out to the same number — say, both reduce to 4 — that doesn't mean you have only one type. The full nine-position sequence still has all nine types ranked. What it means is that the dominant signal is unusually concentrated. The second-position number in your sequence becomes more meaningful than usual, because there's no second dominant to share airtime with.
The order question. Once you have your two dominants, a question naturally arises: which one is more important? Is the digital root the “real” type and the day-reduced number the secondary one? Or vice versa?
The honest answer is that often they're both so influential and so potent that the question doesn't quite resolve. Some people experience their digital root number as their core operating system, with the day-reduced number as a strong second voice. Others feel the day-reduced number more strongly. Plenty of people experience them as roughly equal — two voices speaking simultaneously, with the relative volume shifting depending on context.
The full sequence (the nine-number ranking) gives you precise positional information about how the two interact. For most working purposes, knowing both dominants is enough; figuring out which one feels more “you” is something you discover through living with the framework, not something the math decides for you.
Why we don't use wings
If you've encountered the conventional Enneagram before, you've probably seen notation like 4w3 or 4w5. Wings are the idea that your dominant type is influenced by one of its two adjacent neighbors on the Enneagram diagram — a Four can wing toward Three or toward Five, and that wing colors the dominant type.
VecNine doesn't use wings. Not because the underlying observation is wrong (people do show secondary influences), but because the sequence already shows you those secondary influences, with more precision and without the constraint that they must be adjacent.
Your secondary influence must be one of the two numbers physically next to your dominant on the diagram. A Four can only wing 3 or 5. A Six can only wing 5 or 7. Adjacency is required by the model, not by the person.
Your second-position number is whatever actually came up second in your calculation. It might be adjacent to your dominant, or it might be on the opposite side of the diagram. The data decides, not the geometry.
A Four whose second-position number is Eight isn't “wrong” under the wing model — the wing model just can't describe that combination, because Eight isn't adjacent to Four. The sequence approach can describe it directly. Wings are a useful approximation for a system that doesn't compute secondary positions; once you compute them, you don't need the approximation anymore.
Why we don't use tritype
Tritype theory says that you have a dominant type in each of the three Enneagram centers — gut (8, 9, 1), heart (2, 3, 4), and head (5, 6, 7) — and your “tritype” is some ordering of those three. So a tritype might be 4-7-1, or 8-3-5, or 9-2-6.
VecNine doesn't use tritype either. The reason is similar to the wings critique: tritype is a simplification of what a full nine-number sequence already shows.
Look at any VecNine sequence. Because the nine positions cover all three centers, you'll usually see at least one number from each center somewhere in the top half. That's not a separate framework hiding inside the sequence — it's just what naturally happens when you rank all nine types. The “tritype” is implied by where the highest-ranked gut, heart, and head numbers fall.
Where tritype theory tries to combine three separate type-identifications into a triplet, the sequence approach gives you the same information by exposing the full ranking. You can read off your top gut number, your top heart number, your top head number, and you also get the rest — the second-tier influences from each center, the rejected positions, and the absences. Tritype gives you a chord; the sequence gives you the whole song.
A brief tour of the nine types
If your two dominants are 4 and 7, those numbers point to the Romantic and the Enthusiast. The numbers themselves don't mean anything until you know what they reference. Here's a one-line description of each, with a link to the full type page if you want to read more.
A note on combinations: a sequence with 4 first and 7 second produces a different person than a sequence with 7 first and 4 second. Order matters. The combinations page covers all the orderings in detail: 36 combinations →
