The three instincts: survival, belonging, and intensity
The Enneagram describes three instinctive areas of concern: self-preservation, social belonging, and one-to-one intensity. They are a separate layer from your nine-type Vecnine sequence.

Keep instinctual arena separate from archetypal mechanism
A type helps explain the personality pattern; an instinct helps explain where that pattern is often aimed. The two can interact, but one does not replace the other.
- Self-preservation
- Resources, body, home, maintenance, continuity, protection, and material stability.
- Sexual / one-to-one
- Charge, attraction, selective intensity, chemistry, transformation, and penetrating contact.
- Social
- Belonging, role, contribution, standing, group field, shared purpose, and social consequence.
- Position
- First, second, and last require different language; a secondary instinct should not be described as though it leads.
Discernment rule. An instinct can reinforce a sequence concern or pull attention toward a different arena. Record convergence and tension instead of counting the same social observation twice.
